A Starford man was shot at, stabbed, and slashed with a knife during an altercation Wednesday afternoon in Pine Township and the victim’s uncle was later arrested. After being treated at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, the victim of the attack was released and then taken into custody on an outstanding bench warrant.
State police say 58-year-old Charles Edward Veith of Strongstown fought with his nephew, 27-year-old Robert Paise Smith, and that at one point, Veith took out a knife and slashed at Smith’s chest. Smith fled Veith’s home along Route 403 in a vehicle driven by a third person whose name has not been released. They went to a home along Country Meadows Lane, but Veith followed. When he got out of his vehicle, Smith hit him in the face with a large can. Smith then fled toward the rear of the home, and Veith fired a shot at him, missing him but hitting a vacant mobile home next door. Police say that as Veith then called for Smith to come out, Smith apparently sneaked up behind him and smacked him in the head with a piece of wood. Veith then left and went back home, where he called 911 to report the incident. State troopers responded and seized a .380 caliber handgun and the knife. They took Veith into custody without incident.
Smith suffered a non-life-threatening laceration to his chest and a stab wound to his right shoulder.
Veith is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of firearms not to be carried without a license, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and harassment. He was arraigned before District Judge Guy Haberl and ordered to the Indiana County Jail, with bond set at $100,000.
Smith was charged today with simple assault and harassment. Haberl ordered him held in lieu of $5,000 bond.
