IUP, Pitt, and Penn State all lost Saturday, with the Panthers, as the old cliché says, “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory” on a controversial fourth quarter play against Wake Forest.
IUP’s defense failed them at Seton Hill. Jack Benedict reports.
Pitt led Wake Forest, 17-14, with time dwindling down in the fourth quarter when quarterback Christian Veilleux ran for an apparent first down on third-and-eight from the panthers’ nine-yard line. Veilleux slid to avoid getting hit as he neared the first down, but the officials ruled that he started the slide too early and was therefore down short of the getting to the marker. That forced the Panthers to punt the ball away rather than run out the clock, and Wake Forest then scored on a touchdown pass with seven seconds left to win the game.
Penn State lost for the first time this season, 20-12, to Ohio State as the Nittany Lions’ conservative offensive approach failed to threaten the Buckeyes.
