The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission on Thursday approved lifting the moratorium that prevents utilities from shutting down service for non-paying customers.
The order from the PUC came as Governor Tom Wolf began ordering shutdowns to fight the spread of Coronavirus. While the moratorium will end April 1st for the state’s lower-income utility customers, the commission also requires all the regulated utilities to give additional payment plan options.
Utility companies have requested the moratorium to be lifted since last June. Last fall, companies were allowed to resume disconnections for residential customers at more than 300 percent of the federal poverty level. That’s roughly $79,000 in annual income for a family of four.
