The Penguins have a few days of rest after winning back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday. They return to action on Wednesday at Detroit. The Pens practiced yesterday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
Coach Mike Sullivan was happy to get Jake Guentzel back on the ice for the first game of the season, ahead of schedule after having ankle surgery early in August. Sullivan says Guentzel fit right in despite not having much of a chance to skate with his teammates in training camp.
Players who skate on the Penguins’ two top lines have scored all of the team’s eleven goals so far this season, but Sullivan is not concerned with the offensive output of his bottom six forwards. He says they’re playing hard and well and getting opportunities.
One of the bottom six forwards is new acquisition Lars Eller, who centers the third line. Sullivan says you can tell by Eller’s approach that he’s the son of a hockey coach.
Jake Guentzel says he’s working hard to recapture his timing, and it’s coming along well.
Guentzel scored his first goal of the season on Saturday against the Flames. He also assisted on Sidney Crosby’s goal with a nifty pass from the corner of the net. He appreciates skating on Crosby’s line.
The Penguins will have today off before returning to the ice tomorrow in Cranberry.
