The chairman of the state House Appropriations Committee this week blamed Governor Tom Wolf and “his board appointees” for the 2.99 percent tuition increase enacted last week for the State System of Higher Education universities.
Representative Stan Saylor says the new state budget gives the State System an additional $15 million to prevent a tuition increase, but the Board of Governors hiked tuition anyway. Saylor says it’s “absolutely insulting to the students”. He also accuses Wolf and his board appointees of putting the union faculty first, over the concerns of students. He calls the contract with APSCUF “burdensome” and says it “will continue to put a greater burden on our students and our taxpayers in future years.”
Saylor says it’s time to look at real reform of the State System, rather than increasing tuition and “throwing money at a problem without addressing the underlying causes.”
