The Pirates get their first day off of Spring Training today and are back on the field at North Port tomorrow against the Braves. That’ll be on the radio at 1:00 on WCCS, and on Wednesday they will play their first night game against the Yankees, also on WCCS.
The Bucs yesterday acquired relief pitcher Duane Underwood Jr. from the Cubs for 20-year-old Dominican Summer League infielder Shendrick Apostel. Underwood was once one of the most heralded prospects in the Cubs’ system, but never put it together at the major league level. He appeared in 17 games for the Cubs last year, going 1-0 with a 5.66 ERA. Lifetime, he is 1-1 with a 5.20 ERA in 30 games in the big leagues. The Pirates designated right-hander Carson Fulmer for assignment in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Underwood.
