The State System of Higher Education Board of Governors approved a tuition hike of $112 a semester for the next school year for IUP and the 13 other state-owned universities. That represents a less than 3% increase in tuition for students.
This marks the second-smallest increase in tuition rates over the last ten years. The low tuition hike is the result of increases in state funding for the fourth straight year along with expected healthcare and energy savings. The tuition hike will help fill a budget gap of $49.2 million, but an additional $20 million in budget reductions by the universities will still be needed to fill that gap.
This year, the State System will receive $468 million in state funding, which is an increase in $15 million from last year’s allocation. Over the last four years, the State has restored $55 million of the $90 million in budget cuts it took at the start of the recession.
Tuition will go up to $7492 to $7716 for most full-time Pennsylvania students, who account for nearly 93% of the students who attend the State System schools.
Kenn Marshall with the State System of Higher Education will be on Indiana In the Morning to talk about the tuition increases this morning at 8:45 on Indiana in the Morning on WCCS.
