Today, the Board of Governors of the State System of Higher Education will hold their quarterly meeting, and tuition rates are expected to be discussed during today’s session.
It’s been reported that State House Speaker Mike Turzai will speak out in favor of freezing the current tuition rates, as Governor Tom Wolf has increased funding for the state-owned universities in this year’s budget. Another theory about tuition payment is also expected to be brought forward, and that is having the universities set their own tuition rates instead of using the one-size-fits-all rates for all universities.
PASSHE Spokesman Kenn Marshall said that allowing universities to set their own tuition rates would allow the universities to set their own plans that would fit their needs, programs and student population. The policy would also be beneficial for low to middle-income students. As a part of the policy change, the decision for tuition rates would come in May, giving parents more time to get finances in order before their student go to their first classes. If the policy is approved, it would not take effect until the 2019-2020 school year.
The meeting will be streamed online at www.passhe.edu.
