A bill to move the Pennsylvania primary election up was approved, but there’s disagreement between the state house and senate on what date it will be moved to.
The bill in the house moves the date to April 2nd of 2024, which puts it on the same date as the primary in Delaware, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. That bill passed along party lines. But state senate republicans had proposed moving the primary election date to March 19th, to give voters more of a say in deciding presidential nominees. Pennsylvania is being seen by many as a battleground state in the upcoming election. That bill passed by a 45-2 vote. Both the house and senate also said that by moving the date, it avoids the primary election falling in the middle of the Jewish holiday of Passover.
In a written statement, Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman called the senate’s efforts unsuccessful and “the window to make any change is rapidly closing given the House actions this week.”
