A jury has been selected for the oft-delayed trial of Ray Shetler, Jr., who is accused of assaulting law enforcement officials in an incident in December of 2021. His trial is scheduled to start today.
The 39-year-old Shetler is charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement official, disarming police and resisting arrest. Officers were trying to take him into custody for failing to appear for a probation revocation hearing. He allegedly head-butted a sheriff’s deputy and fought with other officers. The deputy suffered head and shoulder injuries that required medical attention. Shetler was also injured when he was hit in the eye with a taser.
Last week, Shetler’s attorney claimed that his client’s rights to a speedy trial were violated, claiming the way that trials are scheduled violated the state’s speedy trial laws. Judge Meghan Billik-Defazio said that the defense had also requested delays in the trial process, and the prosecution still had time to bring the case to trial.
The case will be tried in Billik-Defazio’s court in Westmoreland County.
