The Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct a simultaneous test of the Emergency Alert System and the system that sends emergency messages to cell phones across the United States.
Both tests are scheduled to run between 2:20 and 2:50 this afternoon. The Wireless Emergency Alert sent to your phone will read “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” It will come in either English or Spanish, depending on the setting of your cell phone. FEMA states that this will be similar to when your phone receives an Amber Alert. The WEA alert tone will play when the alert is initially received by the phone and on some devices stops as soon as the user clicks a button.
The purpose of the test is to make sure that systems continue to be an effective means of informing the public about emergencies, especially those on the national level.
