The Penguins are back on the ice tonight at Washington for the second game of a two-game series. The Pens won on Tuesday night, 3-2 in overtime.
In his injury update yesterday, coach Mike Sullivan said left wing Jason Zucker, who suffered what appeared to be a serious injury in the third period on Tuesday, has been sent home to Pittsburgh for evaluation. Sullivan says Zucker will be missed.
Sullivan says Evgeni Malkin is getting stronger every game, and it’s a difference-maker.
Sullivan was impressed by the Penguin’s penalty-killing unit on Tuesday, against a very tough Capitals power play.
Zach Aston-Reese skated on Malkin’s line when Zucker went down on Tuesday, and he was also on Malkin’s line in practice yesterday. He likes skating with Malkin and fellow winger Byran Rust.
The Penguins yesterday claimed defenseman Mark Friedman off waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers. He’s 25 years old and a right-handed shot. Friedman played in four games for the Flyers, most recently on Sunday. He was drafted by new Penguins general manager Ron Hextall in the third round in 2014.
Injured defenseman Juuso Riikola skated with no restrictions with the team yesterday. Jared McCann skated in a no-contact jersey.
