The Pirates yesterday acquired outfielder Dustin Fowler from the Oakland A’s for cash considerations. Fowler has not played in the majors since 2018, when he hit .224 with six homers for the A’s in 69 games. He hit 25 home runs for the A’s Triple-A team in Las Vegas in 2019, and spent time at their alternate site last year, when the minor league season was canceled.
Pirates’ director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that outfielder Anthony Alford is limited defensively as he continues to recover from elbow surgery in September. Alford was thought to be an option for center field, but newly-signed veteran Brian Goodwin now appears to have the edge.
Tomczyk also said that outfielder Gregory Polanco and shortstop Kevin Newman are both recovered and have no restrictions in camp. Polanco broke his wrist in winter ball while Newman was hit in the knee by a 97-mph fastball in a game in September.
Newly-signed veteran infielder Todd Frazier said in a Zoom conference yesterday that he is excited to come to the Bucs. He says they are a good, young team and he is looking forward to working with the younger players, although it seems odd to him that he is so much older than they are.
Manager Derek Shelton is delighted to have Frazier on his team.
The Pirates finally released their Spring Training radio broadcast schedule yesterday, and it features 18 games on WCCS. That includes the season opener in Sarasota against the Orioles on Sunday at 1:00 and the home opener on Tuesday at 1:00 against the Tigers. You will hear those two games on WCCS starting at 1:00.
