Star point guard Xavier Johnson has left the Pitt basketball program, entering the NCAA transfer portal yesterday. Johnson was averaging 14.2 points per game for Pitt this season.
Coach Jeff Capel issued a statement that “The Pitt men’s basketball program and Xavier Johnson have mutually agreed that it is in everyone’s best interest to part ways.”
Capel and Johnson have had a tumultuous relationship, including several benchings of the temperamental guard, who has been whistled for numerous technical fouls throughout his career. Capel said after Johnson was T’d up against Virginia Tech that he’d been telling him to keep his mouth shut for 2-and-a-half years but “nothing has worked.”
Pitt next plays against NC State on Sunday.
