The Steelers thought they were building momentum heading into yesterday’s game in Houston, but the Texans dominated Mike Tomlin’s crew, and the coach is going to have to start all over again, and most likely with a new quarterback.
Houston ran all over the Steelers’ defense and their defense befuddled Kenny Pickett, who after struggling all day long was knocked out of the game with a left knee injury. Mitch Trubisky could do no better than Pickett in a 30-6 loss.
Texans rookie quarterback CJ Stroud threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns, wideout Nico Collins had 168 receiving yards and two scores in the victory, and even running back Devin Singletary tossed a touchdown pass for Houston as the Steelers fell to 2-and-2.
Pickett was 15-of-23 passing for 114 yards and an interception, with a career-low quarterback rating of 59.0.
Tomlin says the Steelers were bad on both sides of the ball.
Tomlin sounds like he’s seen enough mediocre football.
The Steelers had no sacks against a patchwork Texans offensive line, but Tomlin says that’s because Houston’s rushing game was so good.
Linebacker TJ Watt says the Steelers’ defense was awful.
Mitch Trubisky replaced Pickett at quarterback, almost a year to the day after he was replaced by Pickett. He was 3-for-5 for 18 yards and looks to be in line to start this week against the first place Ravens. Trubisky says the offense needs to step up.
Cornerback Patrick Peterson promises the Steelers fans that they will get better.
In addition to Pickett going down, the Steelers lost tackle Dan Moore to a knee injury, tight end Pat Freiermuth to a hamstring injury, and defensive tackle DeMarvin Leal to concussion protocol.
On top of everything else that went wrong yesterday, the Steelers had plane troubles for the second week in a row. They arrived back in Pittsburgh about five hours later than planned last night.
Elsewhere in the AFC North, the Ravens are 3-1 after crushing Cleveland, 28-3. The Browns are tied with the Steelers at 2-2 in the division. The Titans demolished the Bengals, 27-3, as Cincinnati fell to 1-3.
