Ke’Bryan Hayes was one of the only bright spots for the Pirates last season, but he and manager Derek Shelton both say they are keeping a realistic outlook as the Pirates open spring training for the full squad.
Hayes played only 24 games in the big leagues last season, but hit .376 with seven doubles, two triples, and five home runs, with eleven RBI. He was voted NL rookie of the month and finished sixth in rookie of the year voting … and he will still be a rookie this year.
Shelton says Hayes is focused on doing things well, not on the sky-high expectations of him being the face of the franchise.
Hayes says the key for him will be not trying to do too much.
The Pirates will open ticket sales to the public today for spring training games in the Grapefruit League. They’ll allow 25 percent of capacity at LECOM Park. The home opener in Bradenton is next Tuesday. The season opener is on the road Sunday against Baltimore. You will hear the game on WCCS starting at 1:00.
