Indiana County’s unemployment rate in the month of May went down by a full percentage point.
According to the state Department of Labor and Industry, unemployment in Indiana County fell to 4.3%. That puts Indiana alongside Greene County for the 45th lowest unemployment rate in the state.
Among the neighboring counties, Westmoreland had the lowest at 3.9%, Jefferson had 4.2% unemployment, Armstrong had 4.5%, Clearfield checked in with 4.6%, and Cambria had the highest among our neighbors with 4.7%. The highest unemployment in the state was 6.0% in Forest County, while the lowest was in Chester County with 2.7 percent.
Total non-farm jobs in the Indiana area went down 300 jobs to 31,900 in May, which the department has called a normal movement for this time of year.
