The Pirates opened their final road series with an extra-inning loss to the Phillies. Joe Block recaps the game.
For tonight’s game, Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo [9-14, 4.12 ERA) makes his last start of the season against Phillies right-hander Ranger Suarez [4-6, 3.89 ERA]. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
The Pirates yesterday recalled infielder Nick Gonzalez and optioned infielder Alika Williams. Gonzalez batted .216 with two home runs and 13 RBIs with the Pirates before being sent to Indianapolis in early August. Back in Triple-A, he found his swing and hit .338 with six homers, and batted .424 in the final seven games. He finished the season batting.281 in Triple-A.
On The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS on Sunday, the Pirates’ GM said the team wants Oneil Cruz to continue his rehab by playing competitive baseball in the offseason, and that could be at development camps at the team’s Florida complex or in winter baseball. Cruz missed all but the first nine games of the season with a fractured ankle.

Legendary Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, the greatest-fielding third baseman ever, has died at age 86. He played his entire 22-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and was an 18-time All-Star, won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves, and won two World Series with the O’s, in 1966 and 1970. Of course, he was also the Orioles’ third baseman in the ’71 Series against the Pirates. He retired after the 1977 season.
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright says he has thrown his final MLB pitch. The 42-year-old earned his 200th career win after striking out three batters over seven scoreless innings on Monday of last week. The three-time All-Star played all 18 years of his career with the Cardinals and helped them win a World Series in 2006.
