From the noise at Allegiant Stadium, the Steelers must have felt like they were in Pittsburgh instead of in Las Vegas. And that crowd helped them feel at home as they surged to a 23-7 lead before allowing the Raiders to creep back into the game. In the end, it took a Levi Wallace interception to seal a 23-18 win and put the Steelers into a three-way tie for first place in the AFC North.
Kenny Pickett completed 16 of 28 passes for 236 yards, with touchdown passes of 72 yards to Calvin Austin III and 13 yards to Pat Freiermuth. Chris Boswell banged in three field goals, from 43, 42, and 57 yards, and the Steelers’ defense intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo three times, two by Wallace and one by Patrick Peterson.
The Steelers sacked Garoppolo four times, but it should have been five. Minkah Fitzpatrick would have had his first career sack but was called for a roughing the passer penalty that baffled everyone who saw it.
Coach Mike Tomlin says the Steelers need to build momentum for the road ahead.
Tomlin was impressed by the job Kenny Pickett did.
Pickett was happy with the win, but feels the Steelers can be a lot better.
Pickett says the Steelers’ offense is coming along.
Najee Harris and Wallace both left the game briefly but returned for the Steelers. No other players appeared to be injured.
Next up for the Steelers is a visit Sunday afternoon to play Houston. The Texans upset Jacksonville, 37-17.
Elsewhere in the AFC North, Baltimore suffered its first loss, 22-19 in overtime to the Colts. Cleveland walloped Tennessee, 27-3, and the Browns got more good news this weekend when they learned that the knee injury suffered by running back Nick Chubb was only a torn MCL, not the multiple ligament tears initially reported.
