A mix-up reported earlier in the week and the severe winter weather are being blamed for the recent lack of availability of Covid-19 vaccines.
In a news conference held yesterday, State Health Department representatives said that the severe winter weather that has gone through the state and in other parts of the country has impacted the shipments of Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines from manufacturing facilities. Lindsey Maudlin, the senior advisor on Covid-19 response for the PA Department of Health, said they are monitoring the impact the weather-related delays will have on vaccine shipments.
This came about a day after the PA Department of Health announced that vaccine providers across the state could be short about 55,000 first doses of Moderna vaccine over the next few weeks after a mix-up had some providers using second-dose shots as first doses. The mix-up could also affect up to 60,000 second-dose appointments. Experts say that the doses are essentially the same, so the concern lies only with the scheduling and supply.
Those who are scheduled to get their second dose of Covid-19 are urged to call their provider to double-check before heading out to their appointment.
