The PA Senate on Wednesday unanimously approved a house bill that would implement some new provisions to help Pennsylvania’s School Safety programs.
House Bill 27 looks to streamline operations and consolidate school safety programs and operations under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Deliquency. Several functions in the Office of Safe Schools, including the Safe Schools Targeted Grants for school safety equipment and programs and school police officers or resource officers, would be transferred to the PCCD. It would also create a new executive committee in the commission to review school safety issues and identify current and emerging trends. The bill also seeks to provide for assistance in developing a safe schools collaborative with technical assistance from the state Emergency Management Agency, state police and the office of Homeland Security.
In a joint statement, Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman said that advancing the legislation “demonstrates what we can do when we work together in a bipartisan manner. By taking these steps, we protect our most precious resource – our children.”
The bill will return to the state house for consideration.
