IUP announced that two local football standouts have signed letters of intent to play for the Crimson Hawks.
Homer-Center quarterback Ben Schmidt and Indiana High offensive lineman Matthew Nelson were announced as the newest members of the Crimson Hawks football team in a post on the team’s Instagram account.
Schmidt is coming off an amazing season for Homer-Center. As a senior, he completed 79 passes for 1613 yards and 20 touchdowns. He also had 127 carries for 1,297 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground, averaging 163 yards a game. He is the school’s all-time leading rusher and passer, and when he was a freshman, he lead the team to the 2017 state championship game.
Matt Nelson was a two-way player for the Indiana High Indians. On defense, he was a defensive end, and was a guard and nose guard on the offensive line. On the defensive side, he had nine solo tackles, and averaged 1.8 tackles a game. He had one sack for 11 yards. Coach Brandon Overdorff said that Nelson was part of one of the most efficient offensive lines to come through the program.
