In the final game of the Buffalo Sabres Prospects Challenge, the Penguins’ prospects took down the host team, 3-0, with a pair of first round draft picks leading the way. 2019 first-rounder Sam Poulin scored in the first period, this year’s top pick, Brayden Yager, scored on a backhand lifter in the second period, and Challenge sensation Jagger Joshua scored an empty-netter. Joshua is an undrafted free agent from Michigan State with the Penguins organization on an AHL contract.
The Penguins were coached by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coach JD Forrest. He says the Penguins wanted to give their prospects some unexpected extra challenges in the three-game tournament.
Forrest says the entire Penguins group wanted to show they deserve a chance to eventually play in Pittsburgh.
Finnish Goaltender Joel Blomqvist was the Penguins first choice in the 2020 draft, taken in the second round. He had a solid game in the net, making 34 saves.
Penguins players are due to report to training camp in Cranberry tomorrow, with the first on-ice work coming on Thursday.
The Penguins have finalized their broadcast teams for this season. The radio crew on 92.5 FM U92 will be led by play-by-play man Steve Mears, who switches roles with Josh Getzoff, who is moving to TV. Phil Bourque remains the radio color man with Paul Steigerwald hosting the pre-and post-game shows and Brian Metzer handling intermissions and appearing on the post-game as well.
Although not formally announced yet, Colby Armstrong is expected to be the TV color man.
