One of Pennsylvania’s US Senators has announced his support for the United Auto Workers union in their strike against the “Big Three” automakers.
Senator Bob Casey issued a statement on Friday after the UAW members held targeted strikes against General Motors, Chrysler and Stellantis after the union and the automakers failed to reach an agreement on a new contract. In his statement, Casey said that union members voluntarily reduced their benefits to help the car companies when they were in financial trouble, and that taxpayers bailed them out when the industry collapsed. Now that the business has rebounded with high profits and industry leaders accepting massive raises, Casey said that “suddenly the Big 3 are claiming that the well has dried up.”
He is urging that the automakers return to the bargaining table with offers “that reflect what these workers deserve.”
