It was announced yesterday that Maurkice and Mike Pouncey are retiring from the NFL. The announcement was made in a tweet by former Steelers’ offensive lineman Ramon Foster, who was also Maurkice’s former teammate for multiple seasons.
The two were drafted in 2010, with Maurkice playing his entire career with the Steelers, while Mike started with the Miami Dolphins before going to the Chargers. Maurkice was named to the pro bowl nine times , was named to the All-Pro team twice, and helped the Steelers get to Super Bowl 45. Injuries plagued his career as well as a high-profile two game suspension for his part in the brawl between the Steelers and the Cleveland Browns in November of 2019.
Steelers president Art Rooney II congratulated Maurkice on a formidable career in a statement, saying “He was an amazing teammate and leader that so many looked up to throughout his playing career.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also congratulated his long-time center in a statement saying he will be successful in every aspect of life going forward. He said “His efforts on the field are matched by his dedication and commitment to the Pittsburgh community and the Lakeland (FL) community.
