The Pirates had the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the bullpen couldn’t hold up against the Braves. Greg Brown recaps the loss.
After the game, third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was frustrated with home plate umpire Bill Miller, who clearly blew a ball four call by ruling an outside pitch a strike. Hayes called for the use of the Automated Ball-Strike system using Hawk Eye technology to replace umpires calling balls and strikes. Hayes wrote on his X account, “Some umpires really don’t care,” claiming Miller told him, “I gave you a chance to hit a home run.”
The Pirates return to PNC Park tonight for the start of a four-game series with the Washington Nationals. The airtime on WCCS is 6:10, with first pitch at 6:35.
Henry Davis looks like he’s ready to come back to Pittsburgh. The rookie hit a home run on Saturday at Indianapolis during a rehab start and yesterday he had three hits.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona catcher Carter Bins had a big day yesterday. After two RBI singles, Bins stepped the plate in the bottom of the ninth and drove in the winning run with a walkoff double as the Curve beat Harrisburg, 5-4. Altoona is off to Akron for a season-ending series starting tomorrow night.
The Curve named its season award winners yesterday. Current Pirates starter Liover Peguero is the MVP, relievers Cameron Junker and Nick Domkowski are the Firemen of the year, right-hander Jared Jones, now with Indianapolis, is the Pitcher of the Year, and infielder Claudio Finol is the Curve’s Unsung Hero.
