The beach at Yellow Creek State Park opened for swimming on Saturday, but how long it remains available is an open question. A major beach renovation is planned for this summer, and Park Manager James Tweardy says it may involve barring access to the beach construction site for safety reasons.
Tweardy says park personnel are very excited for the long-overdue upgrades to the beach. He says it will “make the look spectacular”, with the elimination of old buildings, the addition of a new pavilion and a new bath house, a new playground and new soft beach sand.
One casualty of the expected improvements is this year’s edition of the annual Jackie Kallal Triathlon, benefiting Habitat for Humanity. Race organizers say they expect to resume the popular endurance event next year, but with the anticipated construction, they had to forego it this year.
The start date for the renovations is not yet known. For now, the beach at Yellow Creek State Park opens at 8 AM daily. And a reminder…the state on Friday announced that the beach area is now smoke-free, including tobacco products and e-cigarettes.
