Joshua Palacios hit a two-run pinch hit home run in the ninth inning to complete a Pirates comeback for a 7-6 win over the Cardinals. It was the Pirates’ fifth straight win on their Missouri road trip to Kansas City and St. Louis, and it was the 63rd win of the season for the Pirates, topping last year’s total for the season.
The Pirates fell behind 3-0 in the second inning but began their comeback in the fourth when Connor Joe tripled in Andrew McCutchen. RBI singles by Bryan Reynolds and McCutchen tied the game at 3 in the fifth. then after falling behind, 4-3, the Bucs got two runs in the sixth to retake the lead as Miguel Andujar doubled in a run and Ji-Hwan Bae singled in Andujar. The Cardinals, whose runs were all scored on home runs, got another blast, from Jordan Walker, to retake the lead, 6-5 in the seventh. They held the lead until Palacios hit his shot in the ninth.
Coming off a complete game two-hitter in his last outing, former Cardinal Johan Oviedo pitches for the Pirates today against Cards lefty Zack Thompson, with first pitch scheduled at 2:15 on WCCS.
