This weekend, many will hit the road for various events, whether they be close to home or far away, and local and state police will beef up patrols to make sure motorists remain safe. One of the things that troopers will focus on what’s called the “Steer Clear Law”
The Steer Clear Law requires drivers approaching an emergency response area to pass in a lane not adjacent to the scene. If that’s not possible, motorist are advised to pass at a careful and reduced prudent speed. The fine for violating this could be up to $250. In a media release, Lt. Joseph Loughran said they will adopt a “zero tolerance” policy for drivers who don’t abide by the rule.
Drivers are also reminded that if an emergency vehicle is approaching and has it’s lights and sirens going, other drivers should yield the right-of-way and get over to the right-hand edge or curb clear of any intersection and stay there until the emergency vehicle has passed, unless an officer directs you otherwise. On a one-way road, the driver should go to the curb or edge nearest to them.
State Police will also be on the lookout this weekend for aggressive drivers, intoxicated drivers and will also keep an eye out for people not wearing their seatbelts. We here at your hometown radio station remind you to be safe on the roads this weekend.
