The Steelers are working to trim their roster down to the NFL-mandated 53, cutting eight players on Saturday and yesterday trading former starting left guard Kevin Dotson, a 2024 fifth round draft choice, and a sixth round pick in 2026 to the Los Angeles Rams for LA’s fourth round choice next year and fifth round choice in 2025. The frequently-injured Dotson lost his starting job to free agent acquisition Issac Seumalo this year.
The Steelers also released wide receiver Aron Cruikshank yesterday. They will have to trim the roster by 27 more players by 4 PM tomorrow.
Practice was canceled yesterday as coach Mike Tomlin opted for a “team-building event” instead. They will practice today and Wednesday, and then all players in the NFL are off for four days, with preparations starting next Monday for the September 10th opener against San Francisco.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin says this year’s team has a lot more depth than last season.
Like everyone watching training camp, Austin has been impressed by fourth-round draft pick Nick Herbig, who he says has earned a spot in the rotation behind TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith at outside linebacker, and could play his way into even more playing time.
The Steelers’ first week opponent, the 49ers, yesterday traded former starting quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas for a fourth round draft pick. San Francisco traded three first round draft picks and a third round pick to Miami to move up in the draft and pick Lance in 2021, but he was beaten out by Brock Purdy, who was the last pick in last year’s draft, and former Jets and Panthers QB Sam Darnold. Lance started only three games in his 49ers career.
