The State System of Higher Education yesterday chose Dr. Daniel Greenstein as its new chancellor. He’s currently the Director of Postsecondary Success Strategy with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, where he helps universities improve retention and graduation rates of minority and lower-income students.
Greenstein holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in social studies from Oxford University in England. He’s held a variety of university administrative positions, including a vice provost post in the University of California system, but has never been a university president.
Spokesman Kenn Marshall says Greenstein is a non-traditional chancellor who will bring a fresh perspective to the challenges facing the State System.
Faculty union chief Kenneth Mash says APSCUF looks forward to working with the new chancellor. He says Greenstein’s ability to explain how accessible, high quality, affordable education benefits all citizens is precisely what the State System needs
Greenstein will start work on September 4th. He’ll be paid an annual salary of $380,000.
