The State System of Higher Education has hired a former director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation director to be their new Chancellor.
In a conference call held earlier today, the State System selected Daniel Greenstein as their fifth chancellor in the history of the State System. Greenstein served as the Director of Postsecondary Success Strategy with the Gates Foundation, where he worked with other higher education leaders across the country on initiatives that were designed to raise educational-attainment levels and promote economic mobility, especially among low-income and minority students. Prior to his time with the Gates foundation, Greenstein worked as an administrator in the University of California system.
Board of Governors Chairwoman Cynthia Shapira called Greenstein’s hiring a “gamechanger”, saying that his hiring will move the state system forward with other public university systems in the US. Greenstein said he is committed to student success in his message to students across the state system.
Greenstein’s hiring gained high praise from the APSCUF union president Kenneth Mash. Representing the union that represents teachers in the state system, Mash said that he comes with experience as a former member of faculty, and that his reputation for “innovative and proven approaches to public higher education” was well known.
Greenstein’s first official day on the job is September 4th.
