UPDATE: Darby’s continuance concerning his jury selection has been granted. Jury selection for his case will not take place today, and will be rescheduled later.
It’s a busy day today at the Indiana County Courthouse. Jury selection is scheduled in four trials, including that of Matthew Darby, but Darby’s attorney last week filed for a continuance. A ruling on that motion is not noted on his docket sheet.
Darby is the Greensburg man accused of raping his former girlfriend, an IUP student, in April of last year. He is also charged in Allegheny County with the brutal beating death of another ex-girlfriend, Alina Sheykhet, at her apartment near the University of Pittsburgh last October. And he is charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in Allegheny County last fall.
Jury selection is scheduled for 25-year-old Jeremy Stone of Indiana, who in March pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for an attack on an off-duty police officer, but in April withdrew his plea. The assault occurred at the 4th Street Sheetz store in August of last year and the Indiana Borough police officer was injured. Additional charges include simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, retaliation against a witness or victim, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
Jury selection is also scheduled for 40-year-old Matthew Culp of Indiana, who is charged with two counts of driving under the influence, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person,. The charges stem from a traffic stop in June of last year.
Finally, jury selection is scheduled for 39-year-old Philip Cacurak of Blairsville, who is charged with failure to register with state police as required, and with disorderly conduct.
