The Indiana School Board last night gave their preliminary approval for a budget that contains no tax increase at last night’s meeting, but the district still has to figure out how to fill a spending gap of over $1.7 million.
Julia Trimarchi-Cuccaro said that the district factored in a tax increase right from the start in previous budgets, and this is an attempt to break that habit in an effort to help get the district out of the debt they are in.
The board voted 8-1 to approve the budget, with Doug Steve the lone vote against it. He said that going this path will mean the district will continue to run in the red in the future, and that could mean eliminating programs or classes or closing a building.
A budget workshop has been set up for May 22nd at 6:00 PM, and the public is invited to attend that meeting. The budget is expected to be approved at their meeting on June 25th.
In other business, the board did not hire Gregory Lezanic as their athletic director for the next school year. Board president Walter Schroth said that there were still some things needed to be done with the contract, and it was not ready to present to the board. The board also approved extra duty/extra pay assignments to many of the coaching positions in Indiana school athletic program.
