The Penguins will be back on the ice at Madison Square Garden to take on the Rangers again tonight, presumably without defenseman Kris Letang. He left Saturday’s overtime Penguins win with an undisclosed lower body injury, becoming the sixth Penguins defenseman to go down since the season started.
Coach Mike Sullivan says that constantly mixing in new defensemen has forced him to slow the game down and not try to be as up-tempo as he’d like.
Sidney Crosby also talked about simplifying the approach to help the defense in front of netminders Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith. He says that has led to a lot of playing from behind so far this season.
The Rangers yesterday put defenseman Tony DeAngelo on waivers after a reported altercation with goaltender Alexander Georgiev outside the locker room in the aftermath of Saturday’s game. DeAngelo is a minus-six this season and was on the ice for four of the Penguins’ goals, including Sidney Crosby’s game-winner.
The Penguins tonight will wear their “reverse retro” uniforms for the first time this season. On Thursday, for the second game of the Devils’ series, they will debut their “third” uniforms, which are primarily yellow.
Airtime for the Penguins and Rangers tonight is 6 PM. The Pens return home tomorrow for a game against the New Jersey Devils.
