With school starting up for many districts soon, state police are centering their efforts to make sure that schools and school buses are safe.
During the prior school year, state police conducted over 6000 domestic security checks of public and private schools in the Troop A Region, which features parts of Indiana and Westmoreland counties and all of Cambria and Somerset Counties. This includes walk-throughs of buildings and even visiting students during lunch period.
Troopers are also getting ready to follow school buses along their routes. One of the things that Troopers will be looking out for are people who pass the bus when it is stopped to pick up or drop off students, which is illegal. State police remind drivers that if convicted, offenders will face a 60-day license suspension, $250 in fines and five points against the driver’s record.
