The Steelers wrapped up training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe yesterday and coach Mike Tomlin treated it like a typical in-season Thursday practice.
Players wore just helmets and the pace of practice was slowed down, almost like a schematic walkthrough that one would see at practice during the regular season. The team also took part in “7-Shots” again, with the defense picking up a 4-3 win on a Mitch Trubisky incomplete pass on the final play.
Tomlin spoke to the media after practice and said he was excited to get back to Acrisure Stadium as it presents a unique opportunity for his players.
When was asked how long he would let Kenny Pickett and the first-team offense go after they played just one drive last week, Tomlin didn’t provide specific details but he said they’ll see more playing time but they will quote, “play it by ear.” He also said he expects to play all healthy players, that including TJ Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward.
Tomlin also said he was eager to see his specialists in action, especially Anthony McFarland and Calvin Austin III.
The first wave of roster cuts is expected to come following this weekend’s slate of games, and Tomlin said it’s never easy, especially when there are lots of surprises during camp.
Defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi was seen without a walking boot at practice yesterday but will not play against the Bills as he recovers from a Lisfranc issue in his right foot. Tomlin said the injury wasn’t a “long-term concern” but they are taking it week by week.
Defensive back Tre Norwood is expected to miss Saturday’s game as he continues to deal with a leg injury. And offensive guard Nate Herbig will not be in uniform as he rehabs a shoulder injury.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m. You can hear it starting at 5 on WDAD 100.3 FM and AM 1450. Due to NFL streaming regulations, it will not be available at WDADradio.com.
