Clymer Borough plans to increase police presence, especially at night and on weekends, this in light of a recent rash of vandalism.
After Tuesday night’s council meeting, President Louis Tate described some damage that occurred the previous Friday night:
“Saturday morning I drove down to our maintenance garage, and the flag pole was lying in the grass. It’s pretty big, so I picked it up, and I went to put it in the holder and it– they, these kids snapped it off. It was literally snapped off.”
Tate said surveillance footage of the vandals was captured at the little league field around 9:30 last Friday night. The footage shows the suspected juveniles dragging a barrier onto the middle traffic line of Route 403.
A personal residence was also damaged, though no further information is yet available as a police investigation is ongoing on that matter.
In effort to increase police presence, the council’s Brietta St. Clair Mighells motioned to hire veteran police officer Louis Sacco to a part-time position. The motion was seconded by Joe Krolick and passed unanimously. Effective retroactively May 4th, Sacco is expected to work about 20-30 hours per week at the starting part-time pay rate of $11.50 per hour.
Additionally, Tate reminds borough residents of the nightly curfew:
“We have a curfew that would blow at a quarter ’til ten, then would blow a second time at ten, but it’s broke. And we found out it’s going to cost thousands to fix because it’s so old and antiquated. So, we kind of voted to not do anything with it for the time being, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still enforce the curfew just because the whistle’s not blowing.”
The investigation of the vandalism is ongoing.
