The grass at St. Vincent College in Latrobe went untouched yesterday as Steelers had an off day prior to their final week of training camp. The team last held practice Sunday afternoon and it consisted of both film review and on-field drills, which was deemed “significant” by coach Mike Tomlin.
Tomlin said the team reviewed tape prior to hitting the field which he said quote, “set a trajectory for this coming week’s work.” He also mentioned how the team is in the midst of “prep, play analysis, and moving forward.”
Tomlin stressed the importance of quality practices and the lingering effects on a team if they turn in good work each day, especially if a practice day is wedged between two off days.
Tomlin also talked about moving guys around the field, especially on defense, and he said he doesn’t think of those decisions until he has to.
Tomlin was also asked to talk about the growth of third year defensive lineman Isaiahh Loudermilk. The coach said he’s grown over the offseason, especially with his motor skills.
On the injury front, offensive lineman Nate Herbig is being evaluated for a shoulder injury he suffered during Sunday’s practice. Defensive lineman Keeanu Benton is day-to-day after suffering an ankle injury Friday night. Veteran Cam Heyward is dealing with an illness and missed practice on Sunday. Tomlin said he’s away from the team as a way to protect other players.
Players return to the practice field today to prepare for Saturday night’s home game against San Francisco.
The Steelers made two reported signings yesterday. The first was former Vikings defensive back Nevelle Clark to a training camp contract. Clark was signed as an undrafted free agent by Minnesota in 2020 and recently played for the New Orleans Breakers in the USFL.
The other was cornerback Lavert Hill, who last played with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the XFL. He recorded two interceptions and 25 tackles last season.
