After Saturday’s contest was rained out, the Pirates had a chance to even and take the series against Cincinnati in a day/night doubleheader Sunday. It started on a positive note, but it didn’t end well.

Emotions ran rampant in the Pirates’ dugout in the sixth inning as manager Derek Shelton, pitching coach Oscar Marin and bench coach Don Kelly were all ejected after they questioned home plate umpire Nic Lentz’s call on a ball that was well out of the zone. Third base coach Mike Rabello assumed managerial duties for the rest of the game.
The Pirates embark on a six-game road trip tonight and they open it in Queens against the Mets. Airtime 6:45 on WCCS.
On his weekly radio show yesterday on WCCS, Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said first overall pick Paul Skenes will throw quote, “less than 20 innings” this season but will also quote, “probably see some different levels.” Skenes is set to pitch for Low-A Bradenton on Saturday.
Pitcher Max Kranick underwent a rehab assignment in Bradenton yesterday as he recovers from Tommy John Surgery. He earned the loss after giving up five earned runs and three walks in just one-and-one-thirds innings for the Marauders.

Major League Baseball is looking into social media posts involving Tampa Bay Rays young shortstop Wander Franco. The “Tampa Bay Times” reports the posts that went viral on X, formerly Twitter, allege Franco has been involved in an inappropriate relationship with a minor. The 22-year-old had an “off day” Sunday according to Rays manager Kevin Cash, who declined further comment. The team released a statement saying they are aware of the news regarding Franco, they take it very seriously and are in close contact with MLB.
