The Penguins lost a game last night and they lost another defenseman. After rallying from a 2-0 deficit to force the game into overtime, the Pens’ four-game winning streak was broken when Craig Smith beat Tristan Jarry on a 2-on-none break with 10.9 seconds left in overtime for Boston’s 3-2 win.
The Penguins had a 3-on-none break in the OT, but failed to get off a shot when Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang botched a pass and Bruins goalie Tuuka Rask broke it up. The Pens got goals from Jason Zucker and Kasperi Kapanen, who both scored for the first time this season. Tristan Jarry made 33 saves for the Penguins.
Defenseman Brian Dumoulin left the game after the second period with an undisclosed injury. He fell awkwardly to the ice in the Penguins area and stayed down for several moments until play stopped around the net.
With defensemen Marcus Pettersson, Mike Matheson, Juuso Riikola, and Zach Trotman already on the injured list, coach Mike Sullivan did not need to lose another blue-liner.
The Penguins special teams did not help the cause last night. They gave up a short-handed goal and went o-for-6 on the power play. Jason Zucker credits the Bruins.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry says the loss of Dumoulin is big.
The Penguins face off with Boston again tomorrow night, with airtime on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel at 6:00.
