The Penguins host the New York Rangers tonight in the opening game of a two-game series, and they will do so without injured defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Juuso Riikola. Coach Mike Sullivan said Pettersson will be out “week-to-week” and Riikola “more long-term” after both were hurt on Tuesday against the Capitals.
With Chad Ruhwedel absent yesterday for the birth of his child, the Pens’ third defensive pairing was rookie Pierre-Olivier Joseph and call-up Kevin Czuczman.
P-O Joseph has never played an NHL game, and hasn’t played in any hockey games since the pandemic, but he says he’s been working hard on the taxi squad and is ready to go. The former first-round draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes, Joseph was acquired by the Penguins prior to last season in the Phil Kessel trade.
Airtime for the Pens and Rangers tonight on 92.5 FM U92 and the U92 Sportschannel is 6:00, with the puck dropping shortly after 7.
