A note on the Todd Walters case this morning: Indiana County President Judge William Martin has extended Walters’ involuntary commitment to Torrance State Hospital indefinitely. The judge ordered the extension in a ruling two weeks ago.
The 39-year-old Walters is charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault in the beating death of his mother, 72-year-old Ruth Shirey, at her home on Diamond Avenue in Indiana in February of 2015. Since his arrest on the same day as his mother’s death, he has undergone numerous mental health evaluations and competency hearings, resulting in several commitments to Torrance. His current committal was first ordered in January of last year. Last month, he was evaluated again by Dr. Neil Blumberg, a forensic psychiatrist affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Judge Martin’s order came after a review hearing, and stipulates that Walters will remain at Torrance “until further order of the court”.
