An IUP graduate and his wife are continuing their financial support of IUP’s music program with a new scholarship.
Dr. Jim Self and his wife Jamie have made a gift to establish the Jim and Jamie Self Brass Scholarship, which will provide scholarship support to students enrolled at the university who are pursuing a major or minor in the music department with a concentration on brass instruments. The two have made other contributions to the university, including a tuba scholarship named after them and a gift to establish the Legacy Brass Quintet.
Dr. Self graduated in 1965 and was named a distinguished alumni in 2003. He has played with the US Army Band, and was principal tuba for orchestras conducted by John Debney, James Horner, and film composer and conductor John Williams. In fact, it is Self’s tuba playing heard as the voice of the Mothership in the film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” He was also a featured soloist in “Jurrasic Park” and two “Home Alone” movies.
