A Blairsville student who became a viral sensation with his singing talent is getting ready to work on a pilot for a series for the HBO Max streaming service, according to reports from entertainment news services yesterday.
The entertainment news Web site Deadline reports that Adrian Matthew Escalona has been cast for a pilot episode of the HBO Max reboot of the sitcom “Head of the Class”. This marks Escalona’s first acting role on TV, but he has been a part of several stage productions in school. He first garnered nationwide attention when a video of him singing “She Used To Be Mine” from the Broadway Musical “Waitress” went viral in October of 2018, racking up more than four million views and counting. He got the opportunity to sing the song on the stage where Waitress was running after his video caught the attention of songwriter and the writer of the music for “Waitress” Sarah Berelles and other members of the cast.
Escalona also opened for the “Feel the Love of Christmas” concert featuring B.C. Taylor in December of 2018.
There’s no word yet on what Escalona’s role will be in the TV show. The original show ran from 1986 to 1991 and focused on a class of academically gifted high school students at a school in New York City and their long-term substitute teacher.
