The Biden Administration announced this morning that PA Secretary of Health Dr. Rachael Levine has been tapped to be an assistant secretary for the federal health department.
Levine, a former pediatrician and former Pennsylvania Physician general, was appointed to her current post in 2017 by Governor Tom Wolf. As of late, she has been the public face of the state Health Department during the Coronavirus crisis.
In a statement, president-elect Joe Biden said that she will bring steady leadership and essential expertise to the post to help get people through the Covid-19 pandemic. He called her a “historic and deeply qualified choice to help lead our administration’s health efforts.”
If she is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Levine would be the first openly transgender federal official.
