The Pirates looked to be cruising until the Atlanta Braves fought back last night, but the Bucs held on in the end for their third win in four games. Joe Block has the recap.
In tonight’s second game of the series, the Pirates’ Mitch Keller [9-8, 4.35 ERA] tries to win for the first time since June against the Braves’ Yonny Chirinos [5-4, 4.42 ERA]. It’s a 6:40 airtime, a 7:05 first pitch on WCCS.
The Pirates have not said officially when Paul Skenes will take the mound for the first time, but on The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS on Sunday, the Bucs’ general manager said the top overall pick in this year’s draft would be throwing in a Florida Complex League game to start, and it could be soon. Skenes threw his first live bullpen session on Sunday in Bradenton. Despite suggestions that he could begin his pro career at Altoona or even Indianapolis, the right-hander has not pitched since the College World Series in June, so the Pirates are taking it slowly.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona continues its twelve-game homestand tonight with the first of six games against Erie. The Curve will send left-hander Nick Dombkowski to the mound.
