An 80-year-old man who was rescued in a fire outside of Saltsburg last month has died.
Reports say that Bernerd Andrew Zanavich died last Friday at UPMC Mercy Hospital after suffering injuries in the house fire on December 28th at his home on Route 286 in Bell Township, Westmoreland County. One of Zanavich’s two sons, Bernerd Jr. was also rescued by crews on the scene, but the other son, Frank, was found in the basement of the house. Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha pronounced Frank dead at the scene.
Firefighters from Westmoreland and Indiana Counties were able to quickly contain the fire, but it caused substantial damage to the basement.
The cause of the fire is not immediately known at this time. Funeral services for Bernerd Zanavich, Sr. were handled by Corridoni Funeral Home in Avonmore.
