The Penguins started their season with a 6-3 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers last night.
Travis Konecny and Kevin Hayes scored 20 seconds apart to put the game away after Michael Raffl broke a 3-all tie 5:37 into the third period.
Mark Jankowski, Sidney Crosby, and Brandon Tanev scored the Penguins’ goals. Tristan Jarry stopped 19 of 25 shots on goal and defenseman Mike Matheson struggled in his first game after being acquired in the offseason from Florida for Patric Hornqvist. Matheson was on the ice for three Flyers goals.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins had too many defensive breakdowns.
Sullivan said the Penguins didn’t actually play that badly.
The Penguins outshot the Flyers, 34-25, but the penalty kill gave up two goals in three chances. Crosby’s goal for the Penguins came on the power play.
New third-line center Mark Jankowski scored the first goal of the 2021 NHL season. He says the Penguins will get better.
The same two teams the ice again tomorrow night for a 7 o’clock faceoff in Philly. Airtime on 92.5 FM WQMU will be at 6.
Forward Zach Aston-Reese skated for a second day in a row with the practice squad. He has just started skating after August shoulder surgery. He is on the Pens’ injured reserve list with no clear timetable to return to the active roster.
Forward Sam Miletic and defenseman Zach Trotman are also on injured reserve but the Pens did not say why. Defenseman Josh Maniscalco was assigned yesterday to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
And the NHL also yesterday officially listed winger Kasperi Kapanen on the coronavirus quarantine list. His seven-day countdown before he can join the team began last Saturday when he arrived in Pittsburgh after being stuck in Finland because of visa problems.
