Joey Porter Jr. versus George Pickens has been a highlight matchup each day of Steelers training camp and it was again yesterday, with each making great plays. Wide receiver Pickens displayed his trademark athleticism while Porter nabbed a couple of interceptions and made some other plays at the cornerback.
Coach Mike Tomlin added some spice to the competition with a few well-placed barbs. Tomlin likes the way Porter is adapting to playing cornerback in the pros, which he says is a difficult challenge for that position.
Tomlin reported no new injuries for the Steelers. A lot of veteran players sat out the practice while the coach looked at younger guys, and the Steelers were not in pads yesterday.
The Steelers’ first preseason game is next Friday at Carolina. Tonight, it’s the annual Friday Night Lights practice at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium, and the Steelers’ players are looking forward to it.
Linebacker TJ Watt says it’s a big deal for everyone.
Quarterback Mitch Trubisky is excited to get under the lights, especially after rain washed out last year’s event.
